The three spots

  1. SEOUL PLAZA책읽는 서울광장 — 5,000 books on the lawn

The biggest of the three, on the grass in front of Seoul City Hall. About 5,000 books picked by Seoul Library librarians sit on open shelves grouped by theme, and you read them on beanbags. For visitors the useful part is the English-language corner: Seoul's own guide to this autumn season describes a K-Literature shelf of Korean novels in translation. There is also a travel-library booth run with foreign cultural centres, a children's play area and a small local market on the plaza.

  2. GWANGHWAMUN광화문 책마당 — read facing the palace gate

On the lawn of Gwanghwamun Square, looking straight at Gwanghwamun, the main gate of Gyeongbokgung. The theme this season is "Together, Apart", and you can borrow an immersion box or a magnifying glass. The 활자기록소 station lets you type a favourite sentence on an old typewriter and keep it. An autumn market of small makers runs alongside the square.

  3. CHEONGGYECHEON책읽는 맑은냇가 — read beside the stream

The quietest of the three: low chairs and small tables lined along the Cheonggyecheon walkway between Mojeon Bridge and Gwangtong Bridge, right at the water. Rainbow-coloured shelves, theme "Dear Myself". Some weekends there are headphone "책멍" listening sessions. Start at Cheonggye Plaza, which is a two-minute walk from Seoul Plaza, and walk downstream.

Dates and hours (read this before you go)

  1. DAYSFriday, Saturday and Sunday only

The autumn season runs September 4 to November 1, 2026, and the library is only set up on those three days. It is packed away for good after Sunday, November 1.

  2. LEFTOct 23–25, then Oct 30 – Nov 1

Those are the final two weekends of the 2026 season.

  3. HOURSDaytime, 11:00–18:00 in October

Seoul runs two schedules — daytime 11:00–18:00 and night 16:00–22:00 — and switches to daytime operation during October as it gets colder. The city flexes this with the weather, so check the date you are going on the official site.

  4. WEATHERRain can close it

Operation and hours can change with the weather. If it looks wet, check seouloutdoorlibrary.kr or call 02-2133-0300 before you travel.

  5. PRICEFree, and no booking needed

You do not need a ticket, a reservation or a library card to sit down and read. Only special programmes (workshops, kit rentals) need signing up on the official site.

Getting there

  1. SUBWAYCity Hall Station (Line 1 & 2)

For Seoul Plaza. The plaza is the lawn directly in front of City Hall — you will see it as you come up from the station.

  2. SUBWAYGwanghwamun Station (Line 5)

For the Gwanghwamun book yard. Head toward Gyeongbokgung; the book yard is on the grassy part of the square, past the King Sejong statue.

  3. WALKAll three are walkable in one go

Seoul Plaza, Cheonggye Plaza and Gwanghwamun Square sit in a line along Sejong-daero. Walking Seoul Plaza → Cheonggyecheon → Gwanghwamun is a slow 20 minutes end to end.

  4. MAPSPaste the Korean address

Google Maps walking directions are weak in Korea. Copy the Korean address on this page into Naver Map or KakaoMap for an exact route.

How it works on the day

  1. 1Just walk in

No gate, no desk, no ID. Pick any seat that is free.

  2. 2Take a book off the shelf

Books are shelved by theme on open racks. At Seoul Plaza, look for the foreign-language and K-Literature shelf if you want something in English.

  3. 3Read it there, then put it back

Nothing leaves the site — it is a reading room, not a lending library. Put the book back on the shelf you took it from.

  4. 4Optional: sign up for a programme

Workshops, kit rentals and listening sessions are listed on seouloutdoorlibrary.kr and usually need signing up in advance, in Korean.

Make it a half day (our route)

  1. 1Start at Gwanghwamun Square

Read with the palace gate in front of you, then do the typewriter station and the autumn market.

  2. 2Walk down to Cheonggyecheon

Ten minutes south. Take a chair by the water for the quietest stretch of the three.

  3. 3Finish on the Seoul Plaza lawn

Biggest shelves, the English K-Literature corner, and beanbags. Our tip: get here about an hour before closing for the best light.
